FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Solon, OH (April 7, 2009) – Kanan Enterprises announces the voluntary recall of Red Pistachios and Garlic & Onion Pistachios in-shell due to potential contamination with salmonella as a follow up to the voluntary recall of these pistachios announced by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. on April 6, 2009. ALL OTHER PISTACHIOS ARE NOT AFFECTED; NOR ARE ANY OF OUR OTHER PRODUCTS.

To date, the Company has not received any reports of illnesses in connection with the items listed below.  

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.  

The products have been distributed nationwide. A list of affected products and code dates is listed below:

PCA has just expanded their recall to include peanuts produced in their Plainview, Texas facility. King Nut is not supplied peanuts or any other nut item by PCA other than peanut butter. This new recall has nothing to do with any King Nut Product other than peanut butter which was produced for King Nut by PCA. Further to this, King Nut has not nor does not supply any ingredient to PCA in the peanut butter that has been manufactured for King Nut.

(Solon, Ohio) King Nut Companies, a distributor of peanut butter produced by Peanut Corporation of America, today expressed its shock and dismay at findings that report the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) knowingly released a product with potential salmonella contamination into the food supply, as released by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

King Nut CEO, Martin Kanan stands by the following comments: "The findings of the FDA report can only be seen as a clear and unconscionable action of one irresponsible manufacturer, which stands alone in an industry that strives to follow the most stringent food safety standards," said Patrick Archer, President of the American Peanut Council. "The American peanut industry's top priority is the health and safety of consumers. While we will of course wait for the full report tomorrow, this apparent failure to follow food safety regulations must be condemned in the strongest possible terms."

Subject: Statement to the Media and Our Customers Clarifying the King Nut Peanut Butter Recall

On Saturday, January 10, we issued a recall of our peanut butter distributed to food service companies under the King Nut label.

We issued the recall after learning that salmonella had been discovered in an open container of peanut butter with our label. We also made it clear that we do not manufacture King Nut peanut butter nor do we supply any ingredients for the peanut butter. We are simply the distributors.

Since that time, we have been working closely with the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control to help them trace the cause of this contamination. This takes time, but we are cooperating fully with their investigation.

Today, the Minnesota Department of Health suggested that King Nut peanut butter is linked to illnesses nationwide. We only distribute in seven states and therefore King Nut peanut butter could not possibly be the source of a nationwide outbreak of salmonella. (King Nut peanut butter is distributed to food service companies in Ohio, Minnesota, Michigan, North Dakota, Arizona, Idaho and New Hampshire.)

Questions about the manufacture of the peanut butter and nationwide distribution should be directed to Peanut Corporation of America.

We thought it was very important for the public to understand this. We are doing everything we can to get our King Nut peanut butter out of distribution because our first priority is the health and safety of those who use our products. But we can only recall the product that was distributed under our label, and clearly that does not extend nationwide.

Subject: King Nut Issues Peanut Butter Recall

Solon, Ohio (January 10, 2009) - King Nut Companies, a distributor of peanut butter manufactured for them by Peanut Corporation of America, today announced a recall of peanut butter distributed under the King Nut label. No other King Nut products are included in this recall.

King Nut took this action as soon as it was informed that salmonella had been found in an open five-pound tub of King Nut peanut butter. King Nut distributes peanut butter only through food service accounts. It is not sold directly to consumers. King Nut does not supply any of the ingredients for the peanut butter distributed under its label. All other King Nut products are safe and not included in this voluntary recall.

“We are very sorry this happened,” said Martin Kanan, president and chief executive officer of King Nut Companies. “We are taking immediate and voluntary action because the health and safety of those who use our products is always our highest priority.”

“Because we don’t manufacture peanut butter, we will do what we can to get this product out of distribution and will work with the manufacturer to inform others of this problem,” Kanan said. “We also distribute peanut butter from this manufacturer under the Parnell’s Pride brand, although we are not the only distributor. However, we have asked our customers to remove this brand as well.”

Kanan said that King Nut began contacting customers immediately to stop distributing all peanut butter with lot codes beginning with “8,” and immediately cancelled orders with the manufacturer.

1. Where did you ship this peanut Butter?
We shipped to foodservice distributors only in the states of: Ohio, Michigan, North Dakota/Minnesota, Arizona, Idaho and Massachusetts. No other countries or States are involved.

2. How is your peanut butter manufactured?
King Nut does not actually manufacture peanut butter. We also do not supply ingredients for the peanut butter we distribute. Peanut butter distributed under the King Nut label is manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America. Before we distribute their products, we require certification that the product has been tested and is safe. The test includes screening for salmonella.

3. Are other King Nut products affected by this recall?
Absolutely not. We do not manufacture peanut butter nor do we supply ingredients for peanut butter. We package and distribute many other products under the King Nut label and these products are not included in this recall. We regularly test our products for safety and carefully follow guidelines provided by the Food and Drug Administration. 4. What product safety measure do you take?
Before distributing peanut butter, we require certification from our supplier that the product has been tested and is safe. One of the primary tests is screening for salmonella.

King Nut Companies Announce New Location for Flagship Peterson Nut Store
Peterson Nut Company to Move Back to Original Location by Progressive Field

Cleveland, OH, September 1, 2008 – Kanan Enterprises, parent company of King Nut and Peterson Nut Companies, today announced the historic Peterson Nut Company store in downtown Cleveland will move back to its original location, on the corner of E 9th and Carnegie, across from Progressive Field. The new store will open for business on September 8, 2008, with the grand re-opening scheduled for September 15, 2008.

The new Peterson Nut Company location is 3,700 square feet, affording Peterson the opportunity to sell all of the traditional favorites Clevelanders have grown to love, while also providing enough space to introduce new products and services. Specifically, the store will carry Peterson’s brand new gourmet coffee and espresso line. Customers will be able to purchase Peterson’s coffee and espresso ground and packaged, as well as hot and ready to drink. The addition of new Peterson Nut Company product lines, like the coffee and espresso line, are intended to generate excitement and better serve Peterson’s customers.

Solon, Ohio, December 19, 2006 -- Kanan Enterprises, parent company of King Nut and Peterson Nut Companies, today announced the promotion of Joseph A. Valenza to Senior Vice President Finance and Administration, James F. DeDario to Vice President Manufacturing and Plant Operations, Debra A. Smith to Vice President Quality Assurance and Product Development, and Somitter Singh, Director of Research and Development.

Mr. Valenza has been with the company since 1993, serving as Vice President and Corporate Controller and Assistant Controller, as well as holding several positions in accounting, purchasing, and customer service.  In his new role as Senior Vice President Finance and Administration, Joe will oversee the administration of finance, accounting, purchasing, human resources, information technology and customer service.  He holds a BS is Accounting from Western Michigan University, and is a certified CPA. 

Mr. DeDario has been with the company since 2001, serving as the Director of Manufacturing and Plant Operations.  In his new role as Vice President of Manufacturing and Plant Operations, James will oversee all plants and their manufacturing operations.  He is responsible for all personnel involved in production, maintenance, warehousing, manufacturing and engineering.  He holds a Technical Engineering degree from NCTI. 

Ms. Smith has been with the company since 2001, serving as Director of Quality Assurance and Product Development, as well as Manager, Quality Assurance. In her new role as Vice President of Quality Assurance and Product Development, Deb is responsible for the company’s quality assurance, HACCP programs, research and development, policies and procedures and sanitation.   She has extensive training in HACCP, SPC, and AIB. 

Mr. Singh has been with Peterson Nut Company since 1976, serving in a variety of roles including Senior Manager, Research and Development and Manager, Quality Assurance.  In his new role as Director of Research and Development, Somitter is responsible for all new product development and the research involved in making Kanan’s current products continuously improved.  He has a BS in Food Preservation from Punjab Agriculture University.

Re:  King Nut Companies approved for $3.4 Million Industrial Revenue Bond for Acquisition of New Building

  (Solon, Ohio)  Kanan Enterprises, parent company of King Nut and Peterson Nut Companies, was recently approved for a $3.4 million Industrial Revenue Bond that will finance the purchase of an 86,000 square foot building located at 6401 Davis Industrial Parkway.

King Nut Chairman Michael Kanan was recently quoted in "Crain’s Cleveland Business" stating that "the extra capacity in building space will allow our company to meet its current demands while having the capacity to continue with our growth plan."  King Nut CEO Martin Kanan said the building will be known as Plant #2 and is located right across the street from our headquarters and main manufacturing facility.  The location was key to our decision and the building was perfect for our needs.

  (Solon, Ohio)  Kanan Enterprises, parent company of King Nut and Peterson Nut Companies, has announced the promotion of Matthew Kanan, 34, to Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing and Joseph Valenza , 34, to Vice President and Corporate Controller.  Kanan and Valenza have been with the company 14 and 10 years respectively.

 Kanan joined King Nut in 1989 as a part time employee during the summers while attending college at Western Michigan University where he obtained his bachelor degree in Marketing.  He moved up through the ranks as a regional sales manager to his last role as director of national sales and marketing.  In his new role he remains as leader of the sales and marketing group, but also takes on the number two role in operating the company. 

 Valenza, a graduate in accounting from Western Michigan University, joined King Nut in 1993 and learned the complete operations of the company starting in customer service and moving up through the ranks in his last role as controller.  In his new role he will oversee all finance, administration, information technology, purchasing and customer service.

  (Solon, Ohio)  Kanan Enterprises, parent company of King Nut and Peterson Nut Companies, has announced the promotion of Martin Kanan, 39, to President and Chief Executive Officer effective October 25, 2003.  Michael Kanan will remain as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

 Martin Kanan joined King Nut in 1991 as its National Sales Manager and has since served the company in several key roles.  These include Vice President of Sales and Marketing and most recently as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.  Chairman Michael Kanan and the board of Directors said, “We are very pleased with our decision to promote Marty and are enthusiastic about his continuing leadership role.  Marty has been a key factor in the company’s growth, especially in the airline industry.”
